- It is very important that you continue to play your instrument during the summer. If we stop using our embouchure (mouth muscles), we'll lose the stamina that we've gained during the year. As with all muscles, USE THEM OR LOSE THEM! Just 10-15 minutes a few times a week will keep your "chops" in shape.
- Play fun, familiar music. The local music stores have books with popular songs, movie themes, etc.
- Consider taking private lessons. This is the perfect time of the year to begin to study with a professional. Most private teachers have openings that they start to fill now, and students have extra time to focus on their instrument.
- If your instrument needs to be repaired, do it NOW, so you'll be in great shape when band starts.
- Take advantage of all of the FREE musical events that take place in and around the Washington, DC area throughout the summer. The Washington Post weekend section each Friday has detailed descriptions of concerts by military bands, community bands, etc. The best way to become a great musician is to listen to great musicians! Attend some concerts this summer — it's a great family activity!
- Rest, relax and rejuvenate. We've got an incredible band year ahead of us!
