2012-2013 Wind Ensemble Results (May 17, 2012)

Thank you to the 52 students who auditioned for our 64 member Wind Ensemble. I heard many wonderfully prepared pieces and scales, and I am so proud of the countless hours of practice that went into making that happen.

You can download the pdf of the 2012-2013 Wind Ensemble Results here.

Please remember these things:
1) Just because you didn't make it in doesn't mean you didn't have a great audition. Some sections had over FOUR times the needed number of students audition as there were spots available!
2) Just because you did make it in doesn't mean you are necessarily better than people who didn't - there might have been a greater need for your instrument!
3) I have many notes from your audition, and I'd be happy to discuss them with you at any time.
4) Names are not listed in any order.

I look forward to an all time strong program - we are lucky to have amazing players in ALL of our performing ensembles next year!!

Assessments Help High School Musicians Band Together! (Mar 25, 2012)

Sophomore Ignatius Idio’s sheet music is covered with penciled-in advice on how to correctly play his part.

One note stands out, however.

Written large, underlined and followed by an exclamation point or two, Idio has written “It’s all about me” over a section of “Fidelity,” a march the band will perform in a few minutes.

“That’s to remind me that I need to play out more here,” said the 16-year-old euphonium player and Centreville High School Symphonic Band member. With only one shot at playing it right, Idio said those notes are as important as the ones on the page...

PE Bill SB256 Could Mandate PE and Discourage Fine Arts in FCPS Schools (Jan 23, 2012)

The PE Bill SB256 goes to the Education Committee of the Senate on Monday, Jan. 23. Once it passes the committee,it goes for a full Senate vote. Last year we were able to get most of the Northern VA House Delegates to vote no but NO Senators.

We are asking you to contact the committee chair as well as the three Northern Virginia senators. (Howell, Barker and Saslaw) Here is an email list for you to cut and past:

district11@senate.virginia.gov
district39@senate.virginia.gov
district35@senate.virginia.gov
district32@senate.virginia.gov

There is a full list of the education committee and talking points available at VCFAE, and the specific language of the bill if you continue beyond that. This bill is a remakeof the PE bill that DID pass in both Assembly chambers but was vetoed by Governor McDonnell. This bill requires 30 minutes of daily physical activity. While it looks like this activity could comefrom participation in a school sport, it also means since not all students participate in sports - they would more than likely have to take a class, eliminating electives in grades 11 and 12. It alsowould cause scheduling and economic problems at the elementary and middle school levels. Please, please take the time to contact this committee BEFORE noon on Monday, Jan. 23 and keep an eye on your personal email.

TromBlow'in 2012 is Here! (Jan 12, 2012)

THE 804 JAZZ BONES RETURN TO THE TROMBLOW'IN FESTIVAL JANUARY 21

Invited back after last year's debut at the fest, The 804 Jazz Bones will return to the Tromblow'in Festival January 21 at James Madison University. The ensemble will perform twice that afternoon, interspersed with workshops and dialogues with the bandmembers. The morning session will include warm-up and mass-trombone choir rehearsal, a mostly classical masterclass session with Matt Guilford, performances by Nathan Dishman and Sam Woodhead, and likely a performance by the hosts, Mr. Jefferson's Bones. Admission for the full day of clinics and concerts is a mere $10 (including lunch); and the 4p public concert (on which The 804s will also perform) is free. This is a great day for Virginia-area trombonists to gather, meet, exchange ideas, and hear and perform music--and to try out the horns on display.

Tromblow'in 2012 is supported in part by a grant from Conn-Selmer musical instruments, makers of Bach, Conn and King trombones. Additional support comes from ChopSaver, Mr. Jefferson's Bones, and Robert Mott & Associates graphic design. For information on the day and to register, click here. Questions? Please email Ms Schoelwer.

2011 TAG DAY Follow-Up (updated Sept 21, 2011)

A big THANK YOU to everyone who participated and helped out. Marchers - you did great, and, chaperones, THANK YOU for your continued dedication to our marchers and our band program! You ALL gave Herndon High School something to be proud of!!!

The students collected over $21,300 on Saturday: wow! This is about what was done last year, however, there are fewer students in the band this year, so, the amount that each student made is higher. Each student will receive approximately $10.50 per hour. Most students "worked" for 9 hours so they will receive almost $100 in their personal accounts which can be used to pay for your concert fees.

If you took pictures of any part of our TAG DAY event, THANK YOU in advance, and, please email them to the webmaster. Also, remember, most email clients and services will only allow you to email up to 2MB, so, you may want to only send a few pics per email.

When MENC Calls, Herndon Answers (Jun 28, 2011)

The MENC National Honor Orchestra visited Washington DC on Sunday, June 26th.  Since the Orchestra was travelling the country short a few trombones, Herndon alumni Matt Larson and senior Kevin Lovering filled in when the group arrived in Northern Virginia.  The two Pride of Herndon members practiced with the Orchestra on Saturday and performed Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony with them on Sunday at the Kennedy Center.  This was a tremendous opportunity for a couple of talented musicians from Herndon.
