Colorguard Defined

Colorguard is a "Sport of the Arts" which combines elements of dance, acting, marching, and the use of traditional colorguard equipment, to create an emotional and artistic performance.  The main purpose of Herndon High School Varsity Winter Indoor Guard - "Visual Theatre" is to provide a unique and wholly satisfying performance experience, while allowing for more individual attention to develop the skills of our young performers.  Competitions are held in gymnasiums across the country and literally around the world.  These competitions create a performance setting in which the primary emphasis is on education through competition.

Herndon's Visual Theatre is selected at the end of the marching season and practices three days a week after school.  This is a highly competitive unit that will compete in three to four local shows and will take at least one overnight out of state trip.  The Visual Theatre guard is by audition only, and open only to those members who have marched in the Fall, either in band or in the Fall visual ensemble.

Visual Theatre rehearses in area gymnasiums from November to April in preparation for a series of competitions.  These competitions are held during the late winter and early spring.  Membership in the Visual Theater is open to all Herndon High School AND Herndon Middle School students.

For more information about Visual Theatre, please email our director, Lindell Palmer at DirectorGuard@HerndonBand.org.  Also, check out Winter Guard International (WGI) and Atlantic Indoor Association (AIA) for more information about the sport.
