WELCOME to the Herndon Middle School Band Program!! and Congratulations for choosing to be a part of it all!! As we begin this school year together, I would like to take this opportunity to say “Welcome back!” to all of my former students and their parents, and extend a warm “Welcome!” to all newcomers to the Herndon Middle School Band Program. I am certain that this will be another exciting and rewarding school year for all of us as we work and grow together. The performing arts are an integral part of the curriculum in the Fairfax County Public Schools. The band program at Herndon Middle is structured to provide the student with an opportunity to discover his/her talent in music and to develop this talent and interest to whatever level of achievement he/she desires. The band provides a liberal education by expanding the student’s learning experiences and by developing many mental and physical skills which can be applied to other areas - all while we have FUN! Self-discipline in instrumental music is the key to many learning experiences that will enrich the life of every individual. I hope that each student will take advantage of this opportunity to participate in a discipline which may lead to many years of pleasure.   We have prepared a handbook to introduce the band students and their parents to the band program at Herndon Middle School and to establish guidelines for a successful program. This handbook will inform the students as to what is expected of them as members of the band program and of the many opportunities which the instrumental program at Herndon Middle offers to each of them to share and improve their musical skills. Congratulations to Sharon Bonneau, HMS Director of Bands At the Pyramid concert on the 17th, the Herndon Optimists and HMS Principal Frank Jenkins presented Ms. Bonneau with the much deserved Optimist Outstanding Partner in Education award! This award recognizes Ms. Bonneau's tremendous contribution to the education of the students of Herndon. We all know how wonderful and what a gift she is to our students, but it was a real treat to see her get the recognition from the community for her work as well! Herndon Middle Band Wins Best Overall Middle School Band Award The Concert and Symphonic Bands made us proud once again!  At the Music In the Parks competition in Pennsylvania, both bands received first place in their divisions and earned superior ratings.  The Symphonic Band also won the Overall Middle School Band award.  After the competition, the students enjoyed an afternoon at Hershey Park.  A great time was had by all! Way to go, and congratulations, Ms. Bonneau!
