Director of Bands
Ms. Kathleen Schoelwer
Ms. Schoelwer has been the the Director of Bands at Herndon since 2008.  She conducts the Wind Ensemble, Symphonic Band, Pride of Herndon Marching Band, Percussion Ensemble, and teaches AP Music Theory.

Under Ms. Schoelwer's direction, The Pride has been a Virginia Honor Band and a Blue Ribbon School.  They have performed at the Central Intelligence Agency, for the WWII Honor Flight Program, Trump Tower in New York City, and in college stadiums across the East Coast.  Her students are regularly accepted to the All-Virginia State Band, the All-American Marching Band, and the Governor's School for the Performing Arts.  In 2010 she was recognized by the national publication School Band and Orchestra Magazine as "50 Music Teachers to Watch."  She has received a Presidential Citation from the Virginia Department of Education twice and has been recognized by "Who's Who in America."

Every other summer, Ms. Schoelwer conducts an Honor Band consisting of students from the Atlantic Coast with American Music Abroad's European tour.

Prior to coming to the Pride of Herndon, Ms. Schoelwer spent four years as the Director of Bands at Courtland High School.  In addition to teaching ensembles, she conducted the school musicals and founded the school's Tri-M Music Honors Society chapter and Flute Choir.  During her tenure, the Symphonic Band received its first Superior Rating for Grade VI literature and became one of the few bands in the Commonwealth to achieve 10-Year Honor Band status.  Ms. Schoelwer was Courtland's New Teacher of the year in 2005.

Ms. Schoelwer is a native of Arlington, Virginia and graduated from James Madison University with a Bachelors of Music.  While there, she was a Drum Major of the Marching Royal Dukes and president of the JMU chapter of the Music Educator's National Conference.  Under her leadership the chapter broke state membership records and won two out of three National Chapter of Excellence awards, out of a pool of nearly two thousand other chapters.

Color Guard and Visual Design
Mr. Lindell Palmer
Mr. Palmer has been involved in the color guard activity for over fourteen years.  He began performing with the Park View High School Color Guard of South Hill, VA and later marched Revelation Winter Guard of Richmond, VA (WGI A-Class Finalist 2000).  He has served as the director of the Stonewall Jackson Winter Guard Ensemble (AIA A3 Gold Medalist 2008) and as a choreographer for Chantilly High School (AIA A3 Bronze Medalist 2007).  In addition, Mr. Palmer has been a staff member of Herndon's own Act 1 Winter Guard (WGI A-Class Finalist 2006) since 2005 when the organization began.  He has also served as an adjudicator for the DC Dixie Classic Music Festival and has worked on the design team of numerous guard programs across Virginia.

Mr. Palmer received his Bachelor of Arts from The College of William and Mary and his Master of Fine Arts from American University.  He resides in Northern Virginia and teaches Creative Writing and AP Literature at Fauquier High School.

Marching Techs
Mr. Bradley M. Johnson
Mr. Johnson has been a part of the Herndon band community since he completed his student teaching working with the Herndon concert bands in 2000.  For the past eight years, Mr. Johnson has served as a band staff member for the Pride of Herndon marching band.  He is currently an instrumental music teacher for Arlington Public Schools in Virginia, where he serves Abingdon, Ashlawn, and Barcroft Elementary Schools, and this year will be the conductor of the Arlington County Junior Honors Band and Orchestra (4-6).  He is also a choir member and conductor of the orchestral ensemble for The Church of the Epiphany, Herndon.  When possible, Mr. Johnson also takes advantage of opportunities to play the French horn as soloist or in ensembles.
 
Mr. Brett Lemley
Mr. Lemley is an accomplished jazz musician who has worked with the Herndon Band for several years.  In addition to teaching the Jazz Ensemble class, he assists with the Pride of Herndon Marching Band, drawing on his experience as a member of the world class DCI corps The Cadets.  When not with Herndon, Mr. Lemley as a professor as Shepherd College where he runs jazz ensembles and teaches theory and private lessons.  Mr. Lemley also performs on trumpet in the jazz band Blue Sky 5.

 
Mr. John Rosa
Mr. Rosa is currently an elementary band director in the Fairfax County Public School system as well as a member of the 257th Army Band, known as "The Band of the Nation's Capital." Prior to becoming a band director he was a featured soloist with the Tony and Emmy award winning Broadway show Blast! where in addition to marching, he played tuba, percussion, and didgeridoo. Mr. Rosa holds a Bachelors of Music from George Mason University where he studied tuba with Roger Behrend. He maintains a private tuba studio and is an active freelance musician in the Washington D.C. area. Prior to the 2011 marching season, Mr. Rosa was a brass tech with the Pride of Herndon Marching Band from 1997-2001. A native of Long Island, New York, he currently lives in Chantilly, Virginia with his wife Erin and their dog Maize.

Mr. DJ Godinez
Mr. Godinez began working with The Pride of Herndon in 2010. He is currently student teaching at Colonial Forge HS and Rodney Thompson MS in Stafford, VA. He will graduate from James Madison University in December 2011 with his Bachelor's of Music with a concentration in voice. Mr. Godinez is a member and choir director at Otterbein United Methodist Church in Harrisonburg, VA. At JMU, he directed his all-male a cappella group, The Madison Project while providing trombone lessons to local students. For the past four years, Mr. Godinez has been the Music Director and Choreographer of the Music and Drama Camps based at Shrine Mont in Mt. Jackson, VA.

 
Percussion Techs
 
Mr. Aubrey Adams
Aubrey V. Adams retired with honors in November 2001 as principal percussionist and section leader for the United States Air Force Band in Washington, D.C. after over 21 years of service. Mr. Adams has performed in the Kennedy Center and Carnegie Hall with the National Symphony Orchestra. He is the timpanist of the Prince William Symphony and has performed as principal percussionist with the Washington Ballet. Mr. Adams also performs frequently with the Washington Bach Consort and numerous symphonies from Annapolis to Richmond. Mr. Adams may be heard on recordings of the U.S.A.F. Band and Orchestra, Capitol Winds, Warner Brothers, Meredith Publications, and Garwood Whaley’s’ Snare Drum Duets.

Mr. Adams has performed on many local and national TV and radio broadcasts. He may be heard on recordings of the U.S.A.F. Band and Orchestra, Capitol Winds, Warner Brothers, Meredith Publications, and Garwood Whaley’s’ Recital Duets For Snare Drum. At present, Mr. Adams can also be heard playing all 40 of the Percussive Arts Society International Rudiments on their website.

Mr. Adams has served as adjunct faculty for percussion at the University of Maryland and George Mason University. Mr. Adams is also active as a writer. He has contributed articles for the Instrumentalist and Percussive Arts Society; his competition solos for snare drum are published by Pioneer Percussion Company. Mr. Adams has an active percussion rental business and is sponsored by the Vic Firth Company.

Mr. Mike Robson
While in high school in Waynesboro, PA, Mr Robson was involved in marching band, indoor drumline, indoor guard and served as a concert band student conductor.  After high school he attended James Madison University and performed with the Marching Royal Dukes.  Mr Robson is currently Drill Sergeant in the US Army and is an Operation Iraqi Freedom veteran. Woodwinds Techs
 
Ms. Deni Cunningham
Mrs. Cunningham is a former member of the Pride of Herndon graduating in 1997.  She studied flute with Judith Lapple through high school and while at George Mason University where she received her Bachelor of Music in 2001.  Mrs. Cunningham has been a private flute teacher in the Herndon Pyramid for the last 15 years and maintains an active studio today.  She was a marching band staff member for the HHS band 1998-2006 running the flute/piccolo section and also working as a full-time field/marching technician.  For the last nine years, Mrs. Cunningham has directed the Cadet Band at the Franklin Band and Orchestra Camp where she had also served as the flute instructor and the woodwind sectional teacher.  This is Mrs. Cunningham's ninth year as a Fairfax County Public School elementary band director.  She has taught band in several Herndon/Reston area schools including Armstrong ES.  This year she will be teaching band at Floris ES, Lake Anne ES, and Waples Mill ES.  Mrs. Cunningham resides in Bluemont, VA with Mr. Cunningham, baby Joelle, and their six dogs.

 
Ms. Sharon Bonneau
Ms. Bonneau is in her tenth year as the Director of Bands at Herndon Middle School.  Prior to arriving at Herndon Middle, Ms. Bonneau was a member of the United States Air Force Concert Band for nine years.  During that time, she was a featured soloist with the band’s Dixieland group, was a guest conductor of and soloist with the Concert Band, and performed with the Air Force Chamber Players and Symphony Orchestra.  While with the United States Air Force Band, Ms. Bonneau toured extensively throughout the United States and Europe, and performed at numerous music conventions.  She was appointed to the position of Adjunct Professor of Clarinet at George Mason University in 1995 and continues to teach clarinet there.

In 1987, Ms. Bonneau graduated from the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York, where she received her Bachelor of Music degree with a dual major in Clarinet Performance and Instrumental Music Education.  While at Eastman, she participated in the CBS Masterworks Grammy Award-winning recording of Carnaval, featuring Wynton Marsalis and the Eastman Wind Ensemble, and in the group’s subsequent tour of Eastern North America and Canada.  In 1995, she completed a Master of Arts Degree in Conducting at George Mason University.  Currently Ms. Bonneau is a member of the Fairfax Wind Symphony, and her professional affiliations include the Music Educator’s National Conference, the Virginia Music Educators Association, the Virginia Band and Orchestra Directors Association, and the Women Band Directors International Association.  She is an active adjudicator and clinician, and is a staff member at several local summer music camps.

 
Mr. Jake McCray
A native of Fairfax, VA, Mr. McCray is a member of The United States Air Force Band in Washington, D.C., as a member of the concert band.  He joined the USAF Band in 1998 after two years at George Mason University where he was studying music education.  In 2007 he graduated with a B.A. in Music.  As a member of the concert band and saxophone quartet, Jake has toured throughout 46 states within the country, performing at major music conventions, some of the nation’s most notable and revered concert halls, and has performed with numerous world-famous guest artists.  Jake currently lives in Burke, VA, where he maintains and active, private teaching studio.

 
Brass Techs
Mr. Chris Cunningham
Mr. Cunningham is a full time music teacher at Herndon High School.  He began working with The Pride while teaching at several feeder elementary schools, and soon became a full time band director at Herndon HS.  He created the guitar program here at Herndon, and now teaches five classes of guitar full time.  His ensembles have earned consistent “superior” ratings and first place rankings in all competitions.

 
Mrs. Helena Giammarco
Helena Giammarco received her Bachelor of Music in French Horn Performance at the Royal Academy of Music in London, England. She received her Master of Music Degree at the University of Southern California and is currently working on completing her Doctorate of Music at Catholic University of America in Washington D.C. She has played with the Winston-Salem Symphony, the Grazer Symphoniker, the Pearl Harbor Navy Band and the Honolulu Symphony. She was the recipient of the Ella Mary Jacob Award and a place winner of the Dennis Brain Horn Competition in London. She currently lives in Reston, VA with her husband Michael and their turtle, Tibby.
