Director of Bands

Mr. Richard Bergman, Director of BandsMr. Richard Bergman. A native of New York City, he is a graduate of the University of Maryland where he received his Bachelor of Music Education Degree in 1967 and his Master of Education Degree in 1975. He began his teaching career in Prince George's County, Maryland where he taught both junior and senior high school. He has been the band director at Herndon High School since 1978. Under his direction the band program at Herndon High School has received national recognition for its excellence of performance in clinics, concerts, festivals and competitions.

In 1995, Mr. Bergman was elected into the American Bandmasters Association (ABA). He is one of only 15 high school band directors in the country to be a member of the ABA. He has also received four citations for Excellence from the National Band Association and is listed in the "Who's Who in American Education" and "Who's Who in the Fine and Performing Arts."

On numerous occasions the Board of Supervisors of Fairfax County, Virginia and the Board of Education in Prince George's County, Maryland have cited Mr. Bergman for his outstanding contributions to music education.

Along with his many teaching duties, Mr. Bergman is the conductor of the Kings Park Community Band, and has served as an active adjudicator, clinician, consultant, and guest conductor in Virginia Florida, West Virginia, Arizona, Maryland, South Carolina, Georgia, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Kentucky and other states.


Assistant Director

Mr. Brett Lemley. Brett (BS Music Education, MM Jazz Studies) has been a busy freelance trumpeter for over twenty years. He has actively sought experience in a wide variety of music, and has performed in rock, funk, reggae, country, and Latin groups as well as orchestras and jazz ensembles. He has been the director of the HHS Jazz Ensemble since 2003.


Assistant Director

Mr. Chuck Hawkins, Assistant DirectorMr. Chuck Hawkins. Since 1988, Mr. Hawkins has been the Assistant Director at Herndon High School and is responsible for production design, program coordination and all on-field aspects of The Pride of Herndon Marching Band. Chuck (who refuses to be called "sir") brings a broad experience working with youth, and credits band activities with "making me what I am today.

A veteran of nearly four years with the U.S. Marine Drum and Bugle Corps of Washington, D.C., and five years on the band staff of Falls Church High School, Chuck has also served on the staff of the Magic of Orlando Drum and Bugle Corps. In his spare time, Chuck is a Battlion Chief in the Fairfax County Fire & Rescue Department.


MARCHING STAFF

In addition to our Directors, the Pride of Herndon is fortunate to have an excellent Marching Staff that is responsible for putting the show on the field and ensuring a successful season.


Assistant Director of Marching Band

Tim Adams. Tim is a 1994 graduate from Herndon and received his BA in Government and Politics from George Mason University in 1999. He joined the staff in the fall of 1995 and has been with us since then. Besides his duties with the marching band, Tim also teaches a private studio for saxophone and clarinet, he is the director of a sax ensemble, the director of the Town of Herndon Orchestra, and is a Transportation Industry Analyst for the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). You will find him on stage of a local theatre as a leading character in a musical once or twice a year. Tim also enjoys choreographing for the show choirs in the local high schools and for musical theatre in the DC metropolitan area. In his free time, Tim likes to… Are you kidding me, what free time? Music is my free time.


Percussion Director

Paul Fadoul. Paul, a percussionist, is a native of Fairfax, Virginia, and has given solo and chamber music performances across the United States and Spain, including two solo appearances with the National Symphony Orchestra. He graduated from the Yale School of Music with a Performance Certificate. Paul has worked with numerous marching groups over the last ten years, including Fairfax HS, AIA A Class bronze medallists; and Castle HS (Newburgh, Indiana), Indiana State runner-up and BOA Grand Nationals Semi-Finalist (13th place). In addition to his work with high school ensembles, he was also the youngest member of the faculty at the Peabody Institute at Johns Hopkins University from 2000-2002, and a member of Tales & Scales from 2003 to 2005, acting and playing over two hundred shows annually for family audiences around the country.


Color Guard and Visual Designer

Marcus Lewis. Marcus attended the University of Kentucky. Not only is he our full time colorguard instructor, but he is also a costume and uniform designer. Marcus has worked with many bands and colorguard teams from Kentucky, Ohio, Tennessee and North Carolina. Among these organizations are Harrison County HS, Kentucky State Champion, BOA Grand National Semi Finalist and Former BOA Regional Champion; Henry Clay HS a BOA Regional Finalist; Dixie Heights HS, Kentucky State Marching band Finalist, WGI Regional finalist and WGI World Championship Semi Finalist; Eklipse Winter Guard, WGI World Championship A class Finalist; and Onyx Color Guard, WGI World Class Finalist. Marcus also led Herndon's independent guard Act I to a seventh place finish at WGI World Championships in 2006.


Drum Line Tech

Gordon Shankman. Gordon is a 1997 graduate of the Pride of Herndon pit and drum line. He received a B.S. in Computer Science with a minor in Music Performance from Virginia Tech in 2002. While at Virginia Tech, Gordon performed with the New River Valley Symphony, Wind Ensemble, Symphony Band, and Percussion Ensemble. He also helped found the university's Marimba Quartet and arranged several pieces for them. Gordon is an alumnus of the Carolina Crown Drum and Bugles Corps, where he played in the pit during the summer of 1999. He is currently a software engineer for Northrop Grumman and has been a member of the Pride of Herndon staff since 2002.


Clarinet Tech

Patricia Adams. Patty has many years experience with the "Pride of Herndon" and currently works with the clarinet section. Patti graduated from HHS in 1987 and received her Bachelors degree in Music Education from West Chester University (PA) in 1991. She taught middle school band for three years in the Alexandria City public school system before coming to Fairfax County, where she is now the band director at Aldrin and Spring Hill elementary schools.

Patti has a fairly extensive marching background. She played in the HHS and WCU marching bands, marched for four years in the Crossmen Drum and Bugle Corps (she was a mellophone soloist her final year), and then spent several summers as a staff writer for Drums Corps World. She shares her love of drum corps and marching band with her husband, Aubrey, and son James.


Drum Line, Pit Section Tech

Aubrey Adams. Aubrey retired at the rank of Master Sergeant, with 20 years experience, from the United States Air Force Band, Washington, DC. Before retiring from the band, he was section leader and principal percussionist. He currently teaches marching percussion and percussion methods at the University of Maryland. He also works with Director Grayson Fore (another HHS grad) and the South Lakes HS band. Aubrey is very active locally as a teacher, performer, clinician, and adjudicator.
